Arizona Hard Water & Your Shower

Our tap water is very hard — packed with dissolved calcium and magnesium. Those minerals soak into anything porous (grout, caulk, cheap surfaces), leave chalky scale and soap scum on everything else, and slowly etch glass. In a traditional tiled shower, that means constant scrubbing, discolored grout, and eventually water getting behind the wall.

The fix isn’t more cleaning — it’s a grout-free, non-porous shower that hard water simply can’t get into. Here’s the full picture.

The East Valley and Greater Phoenix sit among the hardest-water regions in the United States. Per local utility water-quality reports:

• Mesa — classified “very hard,” commonly reported around 12–13 grains per gallon.
• Greater Phoenix — roughly 9–20 gpg (about 170–350 mg/L of hardness), with total dissolved solids often 500–800 mg/L.

For comparison, water is only considered “hard” above ~7 gpg. Much of the Valley runs at nearly double that. (Sources: City of Mesa and City of Phoenix water-quality reports; USGS hardness classification.)

Tile itself is fine. The problem is everything between the tile — the grout and caulk, which are porous:

• Grout absorbs minerals and moisture → chalky white scale, discoloration, and soap scum that won’t wipe off.
• Grout cracks and caulk fails → water sneaks behind the wall, where you can’t see it.
• Mold takes hold in grout lines — the porous surface holds exactly the moisture and minerals mold needs.
• Glass etches and spots — untreated hard water permanently clouds shower glass over time.

This is what we see firsthand. When we tear out old Arizona showers, the failures are almost always in builder-grade tile work — grout and pans that couldn’t survive years of hard water. We commonly find some mold behind the walls, which we always treat properly rather than cover up. If wood framing is rotting, we replace it. Covering up a failing shower just buries the problem.

Grout-free panels make hard water easy to manage. General rule: a soft cloth and a gentle, non-abrasive cleaner — never gritty pads or harsh solvents. A few product-specific notes straight from the manufacturers:

• Fibo: use a pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid vinegar and other strong acids (they shorten the joint sealant’s life), and never use a pressure washer.
• Sentrel: warm soapy water or a non-abrasive cleaner. For stubborn hard-water spots, Sentrel even approves Lime-A-Way.
• Onyx: non-abrasive cleaners; Onyx makes Eliminate® to remove mineral buildup and Repel® to help prevent it.
• Glass: keep a squeegee in the shower and wipe the glass after each use — it’s the single best habit for beating hard-water spots.
• Ventilate: run the fan and leave the door open to dry; less standing moisture means fewer spots and no mold.
